$2.5 million roadway project causes lane closures on Bird Road.

The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) roadway enhancement project is underway on Bird Road between Red Road and SW 38th Ave.

The project, which will last about nine months, is estimated to cost $2.5 million.

Enhancements will include:

  • Repaving and restriping the roadway.
  • Widening the bridge and road shoulder.
  • Building a new sidewalk on the north side of Bird Road.
  • Upgrading sidewalks and curb ramps.
  • Installing drainage materials to alleviate water buildup in the swale area.
  • Performing maintenance and removing landscaping
  • Upgrading the lighting and installing new traffic and pedestrian signs and signals
  • Installing a pedestrian bridge
  • Removing existing guardrail and installing new guardrail at various locations.

Traffic flow:

Lane closures will occur during non-peak hours on non-event days, night and weekends as follows:

  • 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – Sunday through Saturday
  • 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. – Sunday through Thursday
  • 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. – Friday and Saturday
  • All work from Red Road to SW 42nd Ave. will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. There will be no lane closures during school speed zone hours near Coral Gables Senior High School.
  • At least one lane will be maintained in each direction at all times.
