Hurricane preparedness meeting for Coconut Grove, July 28th 2010
Wednesday, July 28th The Coconut Grove Village Council, Coconut Grove Net Office and Shell Lumber is inviting the community of Coconut Grove for an informational meeting on how to be prepared for a Hurricane as well as what to do during and after a Hurricane in the township of Coconut Grove.
The meeting will be held in the back of Shell Lumber located at 2733 SW 27th Avenue, Miami, Fl 33133. The meeting is being organized by Heather Bettner Coconut Grove Village Council Woman and Liza Gallardo-Walton the Coconut Grove NET Administrator.
Speakers will be:
Marcos Perez – City of Miami Police Department, Office of Emergency Management & Homeland Security
American Red Cross
Humane Society
Shell Lumber
Besides the informational meeting there will be refreshments served courtesy of Milam’s Market and Shell Lumber. Come out and see your neighbors and be prepared for this years Hurricane season.

American Flags in Village West
As we celebrate this 4th of July 2010, we would like to thank the Coconut Grove Negro Women’s Club and the Ministerial Alliance for their generous sponsorship, which purchased and installed the 10 flags lining our Community. The American Flags, on 2 piece white spinning poles with a gold eagle, flying brightly between Jefferson Street and Grand Avenue to Margaret Street exemplify: strength, hardiness, valor; purity, innocence; vigilance, perseverance and justice. These surely are the characteristics of The Grove (“Village West”). The same spirit was exemplified by our United States Armed Forces when it came time to protect and defend OUR right to pursue happiness through freedom of expression obtained by hard work and determination.

Chairman of the Coconut Grove Village Council invites residents to participate
In response to criticism from the residents of Coconut Grove, Patrick Session, Chairman of the Coconut Grove Village Council has released a statement inviting them to be more active in the council. In a letter that outlines the turbulent beginning of this new Council, Sessions reaffirms that the Council also represents the residents and asked them to attend the meetings to voice their concerns.
“We can’t deal with the issues that affect you on a daily basis unless you let us know what they are and what we can do to help.” Sessions wrote.
The next meeting is tonight at 7PM at the Swansen Auditorium at the Ransom Everglades Middles School.

$2.5 million roadway project causes lane closures on Bird Road.
The Florida Department of Transportation’s (FDOT) roadway enhancement project is underway on Bird Road between Red Road and SW 38th Ave.
The project, which will last about nine months, is estimated to cost $2.5 million.

Deadline is approaching for library’s teen photography contest
The Miami-Dade Public Library System is inviting teens, 12-19, to enter its 2nd Annual Black History Month Teen Photography Contest.
Photographs can be black-and-white or color and must capture some aspect of African American architecture, art or lifestyle in Miami-Dade County.
Entries should be un-mounted and no larger than 8-by-10 inches.
The last day to submit a photo is Feb. 6.

Rights Restoration/Sealing & Expungement Event
The Community Economic Development and Design Clinic (CEDAD) at the University of Miami School of Law will be hosting a rights restoration and sealing and expungement event at Virrick Park in Coconut Grove. Attorneys from the ACLU, State Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, and the Wilkie D.
