Church provides sanctuary for the homeless

One Wednesday morning church service in the Village West community typically caters to about 70 people who show up each week to nourish their souls as well as their bodies.

At 11 a.m., they are seated on the crimson-carpeted wooden benches at Greater St. Paul AME Church, 3680 Thomas Ave., where they listen to the Rev. Jesse Harvin. The congregation – all of them homeless – sings hymns and recites Bible verses.

Rebuilding Together: A nonprofit helps those in need stay in their homes

While recovering from a heart attack she suffered in May, Patricia Borden discovered that diabetes had cut off circulation to her foot. Four months later, she has lost all of the toes on her left foot and continues to struggle with high blood pressure and renal failure.

Her husband, Tyrone Borden, suffers from his own health challenges. He also has foot problems stemming from diabetes: He is blind in his left eye and the retina in his right eye is in danger of detaching itself. Still, he manages to take care of his wife of more than 20 years. The couple, who has lived in the house since they married, raised two children, both of them now on their own.

Teaching a neighborhood to defend itself

For a while, Michael Olusczak had been mulling the idea of opening a karate school in the Village West community. As a karate instructor at a nearby center, Olusczak was familiar with the area. But when one of his students was mugged a year ago, two blocks away from Grand Avenue, Olusczak knew for certain that he would bring the art of self-defense to the neighborhood.

“Stronger communities are made by providing positive options for adults and kids to spend their time,” said Olusczak, who opened his karate center, School of the Warrior Light, in August.
